I Am an Authority in my Child’s Life, Not a Resource

Jan 11, 2021

It is so subtle, I hardly notice I’m being led to believe mothers are inadequate to make decisions for our children’s lives.

We are taught a doctor is the authority on our child’s health. A teacher is the authority on our child’s education. A pastor is the authority on our child’s spiritual walk. A government is the authority on their safety. And a culture is the authority on their moral view of the world.

These people and structures are beautiful RESOURCES. Incredible tools and support systems whose expertise I am grateful to constantly seek and learn from.

But parents are the ones God chose to be ultimately responsible for these children.

A mother is an authority. Not a resource.

It’s easy to limit our role to caretaker, driver, cook—blindly trusting everyone knows better for our baby.

People care about my children’s lives. But I care even deeper . . . for their eternal souls.

This is a huge responsibility, and I’m humbly learning, and asking hard questions, and begging for advice from those who know so much more.

But at the end of the day, I am not a resource. I am a parent. The authority God selected to leverage the resources of our generation and make decisions on my children’s behalf.

I don’t want to believe the lie that there is some one better for that role.

I was chosen. I am their mother. And I answer to God.
